Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
The renowned 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)programme was devised by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre in the late 70’s/early 80’s.
MBSR is given in a totally secular context and was the forerunner and foundation for many other mindfulness based courses.
MBSR is aimed to a broad population offering a way of dealing with the stresses and anxieties of modern living. In this 8-week program (plus a half-day of silence), you will learn about the causes of stress in our daily lives and how you can learn to reduce this stress through various mindfulness practices such as meditation, body awareness and mindful movement. We will also cover “informal” practices such as mindful eating, communication and mindfulness of daily activities.
Here is a short video where Jon Kabat-Zinn outlines the importance of mindfulness :

What to Expect
Each weekly class is two and a half hours long and participants are expected to practice for about 45 minutes each day, for six days per week and to do some home practice and other daily activities. An MBSR course is an ideal introduction to mindfulness for anyone who wants to learn how to bring mindful practices into their daily lives. Through the practices introduced in this programme, you will learn how our mind often works in “doing” mode and how habitual thought patterns can exacerbate stress and anxiety in our lives. We learn how to create mindful responses to these situations and, in doing so, reduce the effects of stressors in our lives.

What to Expect
MBCT-L is composed of eight, two-hour classes and about 40 minutes of 'formal' home practice per day. There is also a half-day or full-day of mindfulness practice, which normally takes place between sessions 6 & 7.
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Life.
MBCT for Life (MBCT-L) is intended as a universal taught programme, applicable to the general population. As a recent development from Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression, MBCT-L offers mindfulness practices and cognitive-behavioural techniques in ways that are intended to be accessible to all. It guides participants in how to apply this learning in everyday life both to manage what is painful and difficult and to cultivate qualities such as compassion and equanimity.
